Locust Valley High School seniors Nils Coffey and Beatrix Postley have been named National Merit Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program, sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. They are recognized for achieving exceptional scores on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) as juniors. From among the 1.6 million students across the nation taking the exam, approximately 34,000 were named commended students.

Nils, an IB Diploma candidate, has been inducted into the Foreign Language Honor Society, National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society. He is on the varsity soccer team and captain of Science Bowl. He also participates in the Ethics Bowl, History Bowl, Model United Nations, Quiz Bowl, Robotics and Science Olympiads. As a double bassist, Nils performs with the high school chamber orchestra, has been named an All-State Musician and was chosen for the Long Island String Festival Association performance. Outside of school, he plays with the Long Island Youth Orchestra and enjoys playing guitar. Nils participated in a research program at Hofstra University, completed an internship in politics and was chosen to learn leadership skills through the American Legion’s Boys State program. He has also taken the time to help deliver food to those in need through his church and tutored elementary school students in math.

Beatrix is also an IB Diploma candidate and a member of the National Honor Society. She serves as vice president of the Foreign Language Honor Society and is Mock Trial president and captain of Quiz Bowl. She participates in the Writers and Directors’ Workshop where she writes her own monologues and performs them in front of a live audience. She performs with the Jesters, sings in the school’s chamber chorus and in the choir at her church and attended a summer classical voice program in North Carolina. As an intern at a Broadway production company, she had the opportunity to review scripts, and at the high school, she organized Spotlight Night, a talent night where high school students perform music, poetry and more. Beatrix helps middle school students by tutoring them in history and French and also works after school at a local bakery.

Congratulations to Nils and Beatrix on this exceptional recognition!
