Dear Locust Valley School Families,
As you know, on Aug. 17, the Board of Education voted to accept a reopening plan that gave parents the choice regarding mask wearing. However, on Friday, Aug. 27, the New York State Commissioner of Health issued the determination that schools must follow the CDC recommendations for face coverings/masks in school settings and in accordance, an emergency regulation from the New York State Department of Health now requires universal masking indoors at all K-12 schools for teachers, staff, students and visitors regardless of vaccination status. The commissioner in his statement said, “I hereby adopt such recommendations, imposing them as requirements, where applicable, until this determination is modified or rescinded.”
This regulation was effective immediately upon release and after much deliberation, the Board voted on Aug. 31 to revise the Reopening Plan and all Locust Valley students and staff are now required to wear masks while indoors and on school buses. We will encourage and facilitate the use of outdoor learning spaces. Masks will not be required outdoors.
While the Board of Education is adhering to the regulation, its members have voted to retain outside counsel to fight the state on the mask requirement and intend to explore all legal avenues available.
Thank you for your cooperation and partnership, which are both instrumental in the success of the 2021-2022 school year.
Kenneth E. Graham, Ed.D.
