As elementary schools recognized Memorial Day with patriotic ceremonies, Bayville Primary School’s students quickly learned an important lesson. Principal Scott McElhiney told the children that on Memorial Day and every day, if they see a veteran, they should say thank you. The children looked at the veterans who had been invited as honor guests and they immediately took Mr. McElhiney’s advice, shouting out, “Thank You!”
It was a perfect start to Memorial Day weekend, reiterating that the holiday’s meaning is about remembering those that made sacrifices for our freedom. At all four elementary schools, students dressed in red, white and blue shared patriotic readings, performed musical numbers and played taps, the traditional bugle call played for fallen soldiers.
Middle and high school students also commemorated the holiday with lessons, artwork and the creation of bulletin boards honoring our veterans.
The Locust Valley Central School District thanks all of our veterans and wishes everyone a meaningful Memorial Day.
