Solving Equations Study Guide

Addition & Subtraction

When solving one step equations always use inverse operations. Remember you must always keep the equation balanced.

Examples: n 3 = 7 n + 8 = 15

+ 3 +3 (opposite +3) -8 -8 (opposite of +8)

n = 10 n = 7

After you have solved for the variable, check your answer using substitution. Follow the simple steps for checking:

Step 1 - Rewrite the problem

Step 2 Plug in your answer

Step 3 Work it out

n 3 = 7 n + 8 = 15

10 3 = 7 7 + 8 = 15

7 = 7 15 = 15

If the equation does not work, try again!
