Notes on Place Value

Aim: How do we determine the value of numbers


            Place: The value of the position of any digit in a number

            Period: Each group of three places is called a period

Decimal Point: The dot used to separate whole number from their fractional part (ones place from the tenths place)

Digits:  Any of the symbols used to write numbers : example 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 etc.

Standard Form: The customary method of writing a number

Expanded Form:  A method of writing a number that that sums the value of each digit

4 X 10,000 + 3 X 100 + 5 X 10 + 1 

Word Form: The method of writing the value of a number using only words

Example: Four million, eight hundred fifty-four thousand, nine hundred three

is the word form for 4,854,903
