Notes on Multiplying and Dividing by Powers of Ten

Power of ten – any number that can be expressed with a base of ten and an exponent

103= 1000

When you multiply or divide by a power of ten you can easily find the answer by moving the decimal point to the right or left (depending on the operation)

Remember when you are multiplying by a number less than one your answer will be smaller than the original number

Remember when you are dividing by a number less than one your answer will be larger than the original number

When multiplying by a number more than one move the decimal point to the right the number of decimal places over.

When multiplying by a number less than one move the decimal point to the left the number of decimal places over.

When dividing by a number more than one, move the decimal point to the left the number of decimal places.

When dividing by a number less than one move the decimal point to the right the number of decimal places over.
