Module 1-6 |
Parentheses Exponents Multiplication or Division Addition or Subtraction To remember the order (Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally) Do the operation in the parentheses first – (Work the inside parentheses first then the outside!) Next the exponents. Multiply or divide next, from left to right, whichever operation comes first! Subtract or add next, from left to right, whichever operation comes first! Always work down, evaluating one operation at a time, if you do more than 1 operation you will be marked incorrect! On each line rewrite the whole equation. Example 1: 5 + 56 ÷ 7 = 5 + 8 = 13 Example 2: (9 – 4 + 2) · 3^{2} ÷ 3 (in these parentheses , subtraction is left of addition) ( 5 + 2) · 3^{2} ÷ 3 (finish parentheses, then remove them) 7 · 3^{2} ÷ 3 (exponents next) 7 · 9 ÷ 3 (multiplication is left of division) 63 ÷3 (last divide) 21 (your answer) |
