Distributive Property

We need to "distribute" the multiplication over all the terms inside the parenthesis.
(That means we need to simplify the problem by multiplying the terms.)

This is the property that lets us break apart numbers to do mental math.

We have the distributive property of multiplication over addition and the distributive property of multiplication over subtraction.

Example:

10 (50 + 3) = (10 50) + (10 3)

Example:

 (3 12) + (3 99) = 3 (12 + 99)

Example:

2 (5 + 7) = (2 5) + (2 7)

  2 12    =     10 + 14

      24      =        24

Example:

Multiplication may be distributed over subtraction.

Example:

10 (9 - 7) = (10 9) - (10 7)
