Students at Bayville and Locust Valley Elementary Schools immersed themselves in all things Dan Yaccarino, a popular children’s author and illustrator, in preparation for his visit to the schools. Reading his books and creating artwork based on the stories was a fun way for young readers to learn about his writing style and his illustrations.

Hearing from the author himself, showed the children what goes into creating a book, from the writing to sketching out the story as a rough draft. Mr. Yaccarino showed the kindergarten through fifth-graders how his illustrations evolved from an idea, to a sketch, to a black and white drawing, and finally to a full color picture.

Sponsored by the LVE Parents Council and the Bayville PTA, students had the opportunity to purchase books signed by the author, something that will help them remember his visit for a long time.

The librarians and art teachers in each of the schools dedicated lessons to his books, which cover topics such as underwater sea life and cooking, as well as teaching important lessons about self-confidence. Mr. Yaccarino encouraged the students to follow their dreams.

Many thanks to the parents and the school librarians for bringing this wonderful presentation to the children.
