A team from Locust Valley High School won first place in the Odyssey of the Mind Regional Tournament and now qualifies to compete in the state tournament at Binghamton University on March 27th.

Odyssey of the Mind is a LVHS club which gives students the opportunity to solve problems in unique and creative ways. This year the students chose a long term problem entitled "Food Court". Using this theme, the team had to create and present a humorous performance where a food item is accused of being unhealthy and must defend itself among its food peers. All characters are food items and include "the accused," "the accuser," a jury that is not portrayed by team members, and additional team-created characters. The jury reveals its decision to the audience when the performance is over.

The LVHS team was one of 27 schools in the region participating in the competition. Locust Valley competed against five of those schools to earn the first-place title. Odyssey of the Mind advisor Alan Stella said the group’s performance was exceptional, bringing praise from audience members. “This Odyssey team is exceptionally talented, hard working and very independent. Despite all of their other obligations, they have managed to produce one of the best performances I have ever seen.” Mr. Stella said.

The projects allow students to think creatively as they aim to solve problems that do not have simple resolutions. Thinking out of the box is a priority for success.
