High school juniors Lindsay Merenda and Erica Scheblein were named among the top 25 field hockey players on Long Island. Newsday named the girls in its 2017 list of top athletes.

Midfielder Merenda is a fierce competitor and strong dominating force, according to varsity field hockey coach Sandy Jozefowski. “Lindsay is strong, quick and smart, with great stick work,” Jozefowski said. “She has also developed an amazing air dribble and tremendous lift, launching the ball 20 to 30 yards downfield on free hits.” She added that Merenda is an incredible playmaker and not selfish. She is always setting up the plays and her teammates to score goals.

As the team’s goalkeeper, Scheblein is an extremely gifted athlete who has worked incredibly hard on her goalkeeping skills. “She is strong, quick, and has incredible splits and dives as well as an innate ability to read the body language of her opponents, always seeming to react before they make a move,” Jozefowski said. She described Scheblein as the best goalkeeper she has ever had on a team in her 19 years of coaching.

Congratulations to these talented Falcons!
