Sophomore Ava Schieferstein earned first place in the Bailey Arboretum Arbor Day photography contest, which included 60 entrants. Ava and five of her fellow student-artists submitted pieces for the exhibit and were the only students competing against adults throughout Nassau County. Freshman Sophia Alesi’s submission earned Honorable Mention.

Sophomore Sabrina Alarcon, freshman Gabriella Angelone, freshman Megan Melillo and sophomore Olivia Miluso also submitted their artwork and were included in the exhibit.

The contest required that photo submissions depict trees or something related to arboriculture. Students submitted work to high school art teacher Donna Chaplin. “I selected a few pieces that I felt evoked an emotional response and had strong composition.”

Contest judges included a member of the Nassau County Museum of Art and a Board member from the Bailey Arboretum.

Ava was awarded a gift certificate to the Brass Rail in recognition of her first-place award.

Congratulations to all of the participants and award recipients!
