The Locust Valley Middle School student government collected socks for soldiers and toys for the Matthew Fetzer Toy Drive this holiday season. The collections will help soldiers serving our country who need warm socks, and provide toys for children who are stuck in hospitals for the holidays. The group collected more than 60 pairs of tube socks and about 200 toys as well.
Student Government advisor Meris First said she heard about the idea for the socks from the radio station Z100 and decided to join in with their efforts. “It’s important to teach the students about helping others, especially this time of year,” she said. The toy collection for the Matthew Fetzer Toy Drive is an annual event that each school in Locust Valley participates in.
Matthew was a student in the Locust Valley Central School District who sadly lost his battle with cancer five years ago. It was his dream to deliver toys to sick children at the holidays after seeing how many children did not receive gifts due to the hardships placed on their families. Matthew’s family fulfills his dream and the Locust Valley students are always a huge part of the collection.
