Three Cheers for the LVHS Varsity and JV Cheerleaders! For the second year in a row, the Locust Valley Varsity and JV cheerleaders collected teddy bears to donate to children for the holidays. The community service project was part of a bigger teddy bear collection effort by the New York State Fraternal Order of Court Officers.

The cheerleaders requested teddy bears from students, staff members, and the community to make the holidays a bit more special for some less-fortunate children. After collecting more than 50 bears, the entire squad, along with Coach Doreen Kobus, delivered the cuddly toys to the Nassau County Courthouse in Mineola.

Joseph Cannella, the organization’s president, spearheaded the teddy bear drive, which is in its sixth year. With a total of 1,300 bears donated this year, Mr. Canella said they were able to deliver teddy bears to Winthrop University Hospital, Winthrop Pediatric Oncology Ward, Franklin General Hospital, Nassau University Medical Center, Schneider’s Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, the Interfaith Nutrition Network, and St. Ann’s Outreach.

Coach Kobus explained that the cheerleaders love to perform community service. “It makes them feel good knowing that they are making children happy,” she said.
