Stitching Lessons Together

Sixth-graders in the Home and Careers class are gaining valuable skills while reinforcing lessons learned in other courses. Recently, the students made their own backpacks using sewing machines. Their success in this project required them to use their math skills, improved their hand-eye coordination and allowed them to express their creativity.

The backpacks were the next step after the children learned to sew eyeglass cases by hand earlier in the course. They each made one for themselves and one to donate to patients at the Glen Cove Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation and the Marquis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, which also incorporates community service into the course.

Home and Careers teacher Doreen Kobus said one of the best benefits of the course is the sense of accomplishment that the students feel from making something they can actually use.
