Four middle school students took home first prize at the Regional National Science Bowl at Brookhaven National Laboratory on March 4. The middle school team won every match and was crowned the undefeated champions earning a large trophy, banner and medal.

Emily Barosin, Caitlin Bianco, Zophie Lemaitre and Zachary Watson not only proved their knowledge of science, but also displayed exceptional sportsmanship throughout the full-day competition. During the finals, team members realized that they were being asked a set of questions that they had already answered in a previous round. They asked judges to stop the competition and explained that it would not be fair to the other team to continue without a new set of questions. Judges and parents of opposing teams were impressed with the integrity of these young competitors.

The team, coached by teacher Christopher Hoppner, earned an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the national level of competition. They will spend five days in the capital in April, competing and taking tours of historical attractions.

A second middle school team competed in the regional event but did not advance to the second round. Team members Ezra Pietrafesa, Sabrina Raichoudhury, Shannon Sullivan and Tim Sze were coached by teacher Julie Feltman, and played excellent games during the morning sessions especially as a new team without any member ever having played before.
