Two teams from LVCSD were Regional winners in the prestigious Toshiba ExploraVision Competition. These students competed against thousands of other young scientists and are among only 24 teams selected as Regional winners. A team from Bayville Intermediate School earned this recognition based on their tick detection invention, a device that discovers a tick on the body before it can make anyone sick. A team from Locust Valley Intermediate School was recognized for their invention which is a solution to cleaning up garbage that clutters outer space.

TOSHIBA describes the ExploraVision competition as an opportunity for students to expand their imaginations and have fun while developing an interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Participating students developed and researched solutions to different problems in the world. They wrote detailed research papers that discussed their ideas.

The Regional winners are now required to create a working website and video based on their projects. This media component will be judged against the other regional winners in their grade level at the next level of the TOSHIBA competition. As regional winners, the individual members of each team won a TOSHIBA tablet and are now eligible to win a $10,000 or $5,000 U.S. savings bond if they win the national portion of the contest. Prizes were distributed by a representative of Toshiba at recognition ceremonies held at each school on April 4, 2016. A team from Locust Valley Intermediate School became the national winners in the same competition in 2015.

Nine teams within the district earned Honorable Mention in the competition, which is also a tremendous accomplishment. Congratulations to all of the teams!
