Two LVHS Odyssey of the Mind teams took first place in the Long Island Regional Competition and advanced to the State finals this weekend in Binghamton, NY. The senior team solved a problem called "Aesop Gone Viral,” while the freshman team solved the problem "Stack Attack." A third team, from the middle school, came in second place by only one percent of the first place team’s score.

The senior performance was about a fable gone "viral." The team selected a fable attributed to Aesop, portrayed it, and its moral, as going viral - that is, being shared throughout the community and beyond. Set in a past era, the solution included creative artwork, acrobatics and original music.

The motivated group of freshman chose a problem that requires teams to design, build and test a structure made only of balsa wood and glue that will balance and support as much weight as possible--twice. During weight-placement, teams can "Attack the Stack" where they remove all of the weights except for the bottom one and the crusher board. Their structure held 350-lbs. before removing weights! The team performed a skit based on the project.

The seventh-grade team, “Furs, Fins, Feathers and Friends” created and presented a humorous performance which depicted problem solving from the perspective of three different animals. The animals learned to help each other, and solve a problem that threatened the survival of all animals. Their performance was complete with a song and dance.

Congratulations to all of the participants and good luck to the high school teams in the state finals!
