Senior Spencer Matthei has been selected as a News 12 Scholar-Athlete. To be selected for this prestigious honor, a student must have an unweighted grade point average above 90, an SAT score of 1,950 or higher (or ACT score of 30 or higher), participation in community service or leadership activities, and exemplary achievement in athletics. Spencer will receive a $1,000 scholarship sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union and will be in the running for an additional $2,000 scholarship.

Spencer is one of Locust Valley's all-time exceptional student-athletes. He is a three-year varsity starter in football and wrestling and captain in both sports. He earned All-County honors as a junior in football and is a two-time Nassau County champion in wrestling. He was instrumental in the success of the 2014 New York State Championship Wrestling team and the 2014 Big IV Champion Football team.

Spencer is considered one of the best two-way linemen in Nassau County and has a viable opportunity for the Martone Award, which is presented to the most outstanding linemen. He was selected as this year’s recipient of the Nassau Zone PE Student of the Year Award for Locust Valley High School.

Spencer challenges himself by taking Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses, the most rigorous that Locust Valley has to offer. His academic drive made it an easy decision to commit early to Yale University, which aggressively recruited him for its football team. While many schools have been attempting to recruit Spencer for their football teams, Yale was his first choice.

“Besides excelling in academics and athletics, what makes Spencer unique is that he is a gentle giant,” said Mark Dantuono, director of health, physical education and athletics. “He is a gentleman in every sense of the word. The entire student body and faculty have the utmost respect for Spencer. He is extremely deserving of this honor.”

News 12 featured Spencer on a news segment and on their website. You can see it here . He will be honored at a reception hosted by News 12 this spring.

Spencer is also in the running for an unrelated award from the NY Giants. To receive the USA Football Heart of a Giant Award, Spencer must receive the highest number of votes.
