Locust Valley High School graduates celebrated their successes and looked to their bright futures during the school’s 54th commencement ceremonies on June 28 on the football field.

Locust Valley High School Principal Dr. Kieran McGuire welcomed friends, family and graduates to the ceremony, which included congratulatory speeches from Congressman Steve Israel and Sen. Charles Schumer, both of whom encouraged the graduates to take advantage of their future opportunities. Congressman Israel and Sen. Schumer said they were honored to be at Locust Valley High School, one of the nation’s best high schools.

Board of Education President Suzanne Sgueglia told the graduates to hold on to their memories, and to embrace the opportunities that await them. “Take your memories with you as you move on; don’t leave them behind,” she said. “Saying goodbye to Locust Valley means saying hello to new beginnings. Today you graduate and it’s not the end of your school career, but it is the beginning a life to be filled with adventure.”

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Anna F. Hunderfund acknowledged the Class of 2014 for being an outstanding group of young adults. “Congratulations for developing into such outstanding leaders, artists, scientists, scholars, essayists, poets, philanthropists, musicians, singers, athletes and most important, for developing into caring and compassionate individuals that any high school, employer or university would be proud to have.”

Addressing their classmates and guests, valedictorian Joseph Palumbo, salutatorian Anne Hollmuller and Senior Class President Emily Schlicht recalled the memories that the Class of 2014 shared. Palumbo mentioned many of his peers who have made an impression on him for being outstanding in a variety of ways.

The Class of 2014 as a whole earned more than $9 million in scholarships, was accepted into many elite universities and has several graduates who will play sports at the collegiate level. Numerous students have received awards for art, music, academics and athletics. More information can be found on the LVCSD website at
