Students at Locust Valley Intermediate School created Valentine’s Day cards for Veterans using skills they learned in their classes. The cards had more than cut out paper hearts and glitter on them; some included heartfelt letters from the children that incorporated lessons they recently learned.

Fifth graders are learning about ways to help the community and students in Mrs. Katie Smith’s class used the experience as an opportunity to write friendly letters to help improve a soldier’s day.

Art skills brought patriotic red, white and blue stripes to the typical Valentine’s Day hearts and children added personal touches to make the cards look unique.  American flag pins were also made from safety pins and colored beads.

Locust Valley Intermediate School Assistant Principal Amy Watson said creating the cards was a wonderful opportunity for everyone. “This was a tremendous learning experience and helps the students recognize the importance of Veterans.”
