Locust Valley students are always up for a challenge, so when they were chosen to compete in the LI Challenge, the LVHS Varsity Quiz Bowl Team was certainly ready. The Challenge is an academic TV quiz show for high schools featuring the best and brightest local students. Hosted by News 12 Long Island anchor, Jared Cotter, The Challenge tests Long Island high school students' knowledge of history, arts and literature, science, and math.

The Locust Valley team headed to the show’s taping in Manhattan to take on the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway (HAFTR). Team members include seniors Melissa Bales (Captain), Mary Leah Milnes, Mark Vessalico, Adam Parente, and Craig Casazza.  Craig served as alternate for this match as only four players are permitted to compete.

In typical Locust Valley fashion, the Quiz Bowl Team had a supportive cheering section made up the LV Falcon (Anna Tarantino), senior cheerleaders Carly Chianese, co-captain Corinne Deitsch, Captain Nicole Dooley, Danielle Franzone, Lauren Mitchell, Jenna Prettitore, Patricia Roth, and Katelyn Tisch, Co-Captain. The Junior Varsity Quiz Bowl squad including Tyler Fallon, Christina Boutros, Taylor Anderson, Laura Doukas, and Hannah Milnes, along with faculty members Joseph Harrison, Chris Hoppner, and Doreen Kobus were also at the taping to cheer the team on.  LVHS Principal Dr. Kieran McGuire coached the team with the help of Mr. Harrison and Mr. Hoppner.

Although the results of the match cannot be released until the television airing, the competition was very close and quite exciting. This is the second consecutive year in which LVHS has had a team in the Challenge.

The Quiz Bowl Teams (Varsity and JV) are also competing for the first time in a local high schools’ league.  The league competes monthly from November to April, after which there are playoffs.

The LI Challenge competition featuring the Locust Valley Varsity Quiz Bowl team will air on Sunday, December 26th at 5:30 p.m. on cable TV Channel 14 and On Demand on 614.
