Learning a foreign language can be fun, especially at Locust Valley Intermediate School, where the FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary School) program provides enriching learning activities. With the support of the Locust Valley Elementary Parents’ Council, third graders are learning about the Spanish culture, along with some beginning language skills.

The students recently viewed a film about the holiday Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Following the film, students enjoyed a typical Spanish snack and a craft project.  The festive decorations in the cafeteria, where this event was held, added to the fun atmosphere.

LVE Assistant Principal Amy Watson said the program brings the cultural aspects of foreign language to these young learners. “FLES gets them interested in language and better prepared for their foreign language classes in high school.”
