New state legislation requires all homeowners currently receiving Basic STAR exemptions to re-register with the New York State Tax Department in order to continue receiving the tax exemption in 2014 and subsequent years.
The STAR Program provides 2.6 million homeowners with savings on their school property tax bills each year, but is only available for a property owner’s primary residence. The new legislation follows a Tax Department investigation that showed some homeowners were receiving the exemption on more than one property.
Registration is currently in progress and continues through December 31, 2013. Homeowners currently receiving the STAR exemption will receive instructions in the mail from the NY State Department of Taxation and Finance.  The mailing for Nassau County is expected to go out the week of September 16, 2013.
Homeowners who do not re-register for the STAR Program will see an increase in their school tax bill as a result of the loss of their STAR exemption.
