High School incoming freshman orientation will be held on Wednesday, August 28th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Please a letter from High School Principal Dr. Kieran McGuire below.

Dear Parent(s),

Whether the child entering 9th grade is your first to begin high school or you have an older child who has already crossed the threshold, the transition to high school is an important one.  Academic work becomes more challenging, extra-curricular activities more varied and perhaps more time-consuming, and social lives become more independent as adolescents progress through high school.

In order to best prepare our incoming 9th grade students for their transition to the high school, we have scheduled a half-day Freshman Orientation for Wednesday, August 28th from 8:30 AM to 12 Noon.  Topics covered during this Orientation will include:

•    skill development in light of the increased demands of high school work
•    students’ academic options
•    the importance of 9th grade to future success in AP and IB courses, and for college readiness
•    extra-curricular activities, clubs, and sports
•    academic honesty, with attention to specific behaviors in respect of codes of academic ethics
•    expectations regarding student conduct including the Dignity for All Students Act and social networking media such as Twitter and Facebook

Families should arrange for their own transportation to and from the Freshman Orientation.  Students should report to the Mini-Theatre by 8:30 AM sharp on Wednesday 8/28.  Students will be released that day at approximately 12:00 Noon.

Please also be aware that from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM, the LVHS Parents’ Council will be sponsoring a Meet & Greet in the high school cafeteria for parents of all incoming 9th graders.

I look forward to working with you for the next four years, for your child’s academic success and preparation for college and for life beyond high school.

Sincerely yours,

Kieran J. McGuire, Ed.D.
